A service is preventable maintenance for your car. Basically it's replacing all the perishable components on your car including liquids, filters, belts and more. Every single car has a specific service schedule for every interval but, in short, there are two main types of service: interim and full. An interim service is replacing the essentials like your oil and filter and should be considered a "bare minimum service". A full service includes the replacement of all filters, spark plugs and oil. It can also include the replacement of belts, gearbox / differential oils, glow plugs, seals and more.
Part of being a vehicle owner is maintaining and looking after your car. Servicing is the easiest and most cost effective way to do this. All vehicle manufacturers have specific schedules and timeframes for when each serviceable component on your car needs to be replaced. This information is in your vehicle handbook / owners manual but if you're not sure, we can assist. Generally, manufacturers schedules only go up to 12 years or 150,000 miles so what might you do if your car is over 12 years old? Well it's still essential to be servicing your car regularly but you might benefit from an adapted schedule. For example doing an interim and full service on alternate years but we can adapt something more personalized to your specific vehicle upon request.
99% of all cars on UK road have engines built on the same format. The way it works is effectively your engine is split into 2 parts: the top and the bottom. These two parts MUST run in absolute synchronization and they're linked by timing gear, what's more commonly known as a cambelt, timing belt or timing chain. Typically timing chains do not need to be replaced unless they begin to show sign of wear but cambelts / timing belts usually have an interval for when they need to be replaced. Because they link the top and bottom halves of your engine it's crucial they're replaced on time, failure of these components leads to catastrophic engine failure and can, effectively, "write-off" off your engine and sometimes your car. Normally a timing belt change interval is 10 years (or 100,000 miles whichever comes first) but some cars have an interval for half that! If you're not sure when you should be replacing your engines timing gear let us know and we'll be happy to assist you.

As you know MOTs are the annual inspection your vehicle is required to have to insure it's fit for the road, they're also the most common reason owners take their vehicles to garages and repair shops. An MOT covers a wide area of things on your car and so your car could have a multitude of issues you're not sure how to fix. Although Ackroyds Autos doesn't have an MOT testing station we do have good relationships with several MOT test stations in the area so we can arrange getting an MOT sorted for your car whilst we have it. We also do pre-MOT inspections which are even more in depth than an MOT so you know exactly what to expect before your MOT. We carry out a full range of suspension work, powertrain work, chassis work, braking work and more so should your car fail an MOT we can have you back on the road in a flash!
